The Story
Diana is a gifted, highly skilled furniture artist who has been creating
beautiful, unique and whimsical art furniture for years. Diana's passion
to provide beautiful, artful and whimsical hardwood rocking chairs for healing
was born from personal experience!
She discovered she had a life threatening illness. Diana had the "opportunity"
to receive a bone marrow transplant at Oregon Health Sciences University,
Portland, Oregon, to give her a second
chance
at life. The treatment necessitated a hospital stay of almost a month of
days that challenged even wanting to get out of bed. Diana, a "rocker" from
childhood, was dismayed to find that lack of funding in medical facilities
meant there were no rocking chairs available for use while healing. Diana
knew the hospital would require furniture appropriate for a sterile environment.
She took her own rocking chair to the bone marrow unit, and, after successful
treatment, donated the rocker to the unit. When she found out from staff
on the unit that most of the patients wanted to use the rocker, she applied
her hand painted magic to other rocking chairs and donated them to the unit.
The response was wonderful and her path was created!
Diana then hand painted a rocker for the cancer unit at Dornbecher Children's
Hospital, Portland, Oregon. She created a story about the magic in the rocker
and how the users could "feed" the rocker with stories, songs and healing
thoughts. The story was laminated and included with the rocker. Once again,
the nursing staff was grateful for the comfort of having the rocker available
for the patients and their parents.
While doing research, Diana discovered studies that over and over have proven
there are very real emotional and physical benefits to patients who use rocking
chairs.
